In 1930, a man died by suicide in the Wausau area leaving behind a note that identified him as a WWI veteran. He left no other identifying information, in fact making sure that his person was found with no information so as not to embarrass or sadden his family.
A Wausau-area veterans group laid the man to rest in the fall of 1930 with full burial rites in "potters field", in the south east corner of Pine Grove Cemetery. There is a monument placed at the grave which states "The unknown soldier buried by Post No 388 VFW and Post No 10 A.L." You can visit this site by entering the cemetery and driving to the far back right of the property.
Every year around Memorial Day, a group of people including some from the Daughters of the American Revolution, gather to pay their respects. They mourn his lonely death and honor his service. They vow to continue to look over the gravesite and meet to remember the man and his service in years to come.
